SP 5"x5" |
Son of Aimee Semple McPherson. "Sister Aimee," as she was known throughout her career, was an early evangelist and media sensation. Born in 1890, she began her religious life as a missionary with her first husband, Robert Semple. The two were living in China when they both contracted dysentery. She survived, but her husband died. After returning to the U.S., she began a series of revivals that gained in popularity, and over the years she acquired an immense following. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, she was seen in movies and print, and heard on the radio. In the early 1920s she built the huge Church of the Foursquare Gospel in Glendale California, which still ministers worldwide. Sister Aimee was the subject of a l926 scandal, when she mysteriously disappeared after going for a swim in the ocean. Her sound man, Kenneth G. Ormiston, disappeared around the same time. She was discovered 35 days later stumbling out of a Mexican desert with a story of being kidnapped and drugged. It was determined her story didn't add up, and she was accused of lying to the authorities and of possibly having an affair with Ormiston. After a very public trial, all charges were dropped and Aimee resumed her preaching. She died in 1944. Leadership of the Foursquare Church was assumed by her son, Rolf. Although retired since 1997, he still attends services every week. |
