Prominent oceanographer and underwater archaeologist. Famous for his discovery of the sunken liner Titanic, which went down in April, 1912 off the coast of Nova Scotia. He also located the wreck of the Bismarck in 1989. His work has been featured in National Geographic Magazine, in books and on television.

Sir Timothy "Tim" John Berners-Lee, KBE, FRS, was born in 1955 in London. He is the inventor of the World Wide Web and a director of the World Wide Web Consortium. He is still very much involved in its continuing development. He has received many honors including the Order of the British Empire, and the Principe de Asturias. In 2002 he was named one of the 100 greatest Britons of all time.

Wilson Greatbatch SP

Inventor of the world's first Pacemaker. Owns his own engineering firm, Greatbatch Enterprises. He chaired Biophan's Scientific Advisory Board from 2000 to 2002. He also developed the lithium iodine batteries used in most pacemakers. In 2001 Greatbatch was honored by the National Academy of Engineering for his invention of the implantable pacemaker.

Born in Egypt in 1947, Hawass is the Undersecretary of the State for the Giza Monuments, and was General Director of the Giza Pyramids from 1987 to 1998. Considered the Guardian of Egypt, he is one of the most recognized of all Egytologists, and has been the focus of numerous newspaper articles and television specials.

Dame Ellen MacArthur, DBE, is an English sailor, best known as a solo long-distance yachtswoman who, on February 7, 2005, broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe. She is also an honorary Lieutenant Commander of the Royal Naval Reserve.
John Nash SP

Nobel Prize winner. Labeled a genius by his mathematics professor at Carnegie Tech, Nash entered Princeton University in 1948, and has had a long association with that institution ever since. He produced a number of papers relating to science, including "Nash Equilibrium" and "Nash Bargaining Solution." In 1958 he developed symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia which devastated his life for the next two decades. The disease began to disappear in the 1970s and he was gradually able to return to his work. The film "A Beautiful Mind" is based on his life.
Linus Pauling Signed FDC Linus Pauling was the only man in the world to have won two unshared Nobel Prizes. In 1954, for Chemistry and in 1962, for Peace. Was friends with Albert Einstein, with whom he shared a passion for world peace. He also championed the use of Vitamin C and its positive effect on health. He founded the Linus Pauling Institute in California, where researchers investigated the basic causes of disease. Pauling died in 1994 at the age of 93.

Geophysicist and seismologist Waverly J. Person is a nationally recognized authority on earthquakes. Past director of the Colorado National Earthquake Information Center. Recipient of the Outstanding Government Communicator Award, the Meritorious Serve Award and the Annual Minority Award.
Miriam Rothschild TNS Member of the famous Jewish banking family, Miriam Rothschild was born in 1908 in Ashton Wold. As a young lady she was a keen sportswoman. In the 1930s she studied at the Marine Biological Station in Plymouth. She became the world's leading authority on fleas, and was author of over 300 articles and journals on entomology. Rothschild died in 2005.
Edward Teller Index Card

Edward Teller (1908-2003), senior research fellow at the Hoover Institution since 1975. Teller was a member of the Advisory Committee of the US Atomic Energy Commission and was a chairman of the first Nuclear Reaction Safeguard Committee. Teller was a member of the Manhattan Project based at the University of Chicago in the 1940s, which resulted in the perfection of the atomic bomb.
Charles Townes SP

Born in 1915 in South Carolina. Attended Furman University there, and attained his Master of Arts degree in Physics from Duke University. He was a member of Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1933 to 1947. Designed radar bombing systems during WWII. Began work in the 1950s on experiments that resulted in the invention of the laser beam. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964.
Ed Wayburn SP

Dr. Ed Wayburn was a practicing physician at the same time he served five terms as president of the Sierra Club. Dr. Wayburn, who turned 100 in 2006, was the driving force behind the establishment of the Redwood National Park in California. He is also credited with saving more wilderness area from developement than any other individual. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999.
