Best known as Buddy Sorrell on the TV series The Dick Van Dyke Show. Amsterdam was born in 1931, and has appeared in vaudeville, radio, television and movies, and his brand of schmaltzy humor gained him the nickname, "The Human Joke Machine." He was also a songwriter and collaborated on the 1940s hit, "Rum and Coca-Cola." He was a guest on many variety and game shows, as well as a panelist on The Match Game. He died in 1996.

Sir David Attenborough began his distinguished broadcasting career more than 50 years ago, when he joined the BBC. Two years later he moderated the popular Zoo Quest, which took him to far parts of the globe. He has also hosted TV programs dealing with history, nature, politics and religion. During his years with the BBC he was among those responsible for introducing color TV into England. He was knighted in 1985.

Bruce Bennett was born Herman Brix in 1906. A start athlete, he was a shot-putter in the Olympics of 1928. He was one of the many actors who portrayed Tarzan in films. He eventually retired from films to go into business as a sales manager. His films include College Humor (1933), The New Adventures of Tarzan (1935), Tarzan and the Green Goddess (1938), Before I Hang (1940), Mildred Pierce with Joan Crawford (1945) and Love Me Tender (1956). Bennett died in February, 2007.

The son of Western great Harry Carey, Harry Carey Jr. has been an actor most of his life. After serving in the South Pacific in WWII, he started working in feature Westerns. His films include She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Niagara, with Marilyn Monroe (1953), Mister Roberts with James Cagney (1955), and Dirty Dingus Magee (1970). He has appeared more recently in The Exorcist III, as Father Kanavan (1990), and Last Stand at Saber River (1997). He is remembered by many Baby Boomers from his role in The Mickey Mouse Club serial "Spin and Marty."

One of America's most celebrated dancers, Cunningham was born in Washington state in 1919. A recognized talent early on, he appeared with many of the avant garde of his day, including Martha Graham. A dancer, teacher and mentor through the 1930s into the 1950s, he established the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and he still continues to choreograph to this day. He was also on the development team for the dance software "Danceforms," which allows the user to choreograph on a computer.

Stand-up comedian known for her distinctive laugh, she received her first national exposure in 1950 as a contestant on "You Bet Your Life," hosted by Groucho Marx. Her comedy had to do with the mundane matters of an everyday housewife, and he has appeared in numerous movies and TV specials with people such as Dean Martin and Bob Hope. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1993.
Deanna Durbin TNS Born Edna Mae Durbin in 1921, she became a well-known figure on the screen at a young age. By the time she was 14, she was the highest paid female star in the world. She was groomed as the "classy" counterpart to Judy Garland, another major singing star of the era. Durbin made a number of films including Three Smart Girls (1936), One Hundred Men and a Girl (1937), The Amazing Mrs. Holliday (1943) and Up in Central Park (1948). At the height of her career she turned her back on Hollywood and retired into a life of seclusion as Mrs. Charles David, whom she married in 1950.

She was half of a well-publicized rivalry wit her sister, Olivia de Havilland. She appeared in the films A Damsel in Distress, as Fred Astaire's dancing partner (1937), The Women, with Joan Crawford and Rosiland Russell (1939), Rebecca, with Cary Grant (1940) and Jane Eyre, with Orson Welles (1944). Her most recent appearance was as Queen Ludmilla in Good King Wenceslas, made for TV (1994).

Monte Hale SP

Monte Hale was one of a number of popular Western stars in the 1940s and 1950s, appearing in serials shown in movie theaters on Saturday mornings that thrilled kids across the country. He was born in 1919 in Oklahoma. He played in early vaudeville shows in Texas and eventually went to work for Republic Pictures, the studio famous for churning out "B" Westerns. Later in life he toured in shows and rodeos and still makes appearances at Western film conventions. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004.

Jackson was seen in some of the earliest Our Gang one-reeler comedies, from 1928 to 1931, made for the Hal Roach Studios. She is still remembered as the tomboy with the freckles and the Buster Brown haircut, and her many snappy comebacks to the other members of the Gang. By the mid 1930s, still a young girl, she tired of Hollywood, got married and settled into a routine life. She made only a few appearances as an adult, most notably in Ma and Pa Kettle Go To Town, in 1951, and an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. Jackson died in 2003.
Dorothy Janis SP

Dorothy Janis (born 1910) is one of the few remaining silent film actresses. Born in Dallas, she was visiting her cousin who was working for Fox Studios in 1927. Her beauty attracted the attention of film bosses and she was asked to do a screen test. She went on to make five films, including The Pagan (1929) with Ramon Novarro. She retired from films in 1930 and married bandleader Wayne King in 1932. They remained married until he died in 1985. This photo was signed in 2009.
Dickie Jones SP

Dickie Jones was an early actor in "B" Westerns, and appeared in a number of major motion pictures. Born in 1927 in Texas, he was performing locally in rodeos and at fairs, and was known for his roping and lariat tricks. His parents took him to Hollywood, where he got small parts in low-budget movies. In 1940, however, he was chosen as the voice of Pinnochio, in Disney's film of the same name. After serving during WWII, he found steady work as Dick West, the sidekick in the TV series Range Rider, in the early 1950s. He was given his own series, Buffalo Bill Jr., which ran for over 4o episodes. Jones eventually left acting for the business world. His films include Kid Millions (1934) Our Gang Follies of 1936 (1935) Stella Dallas (1937) The Frontiersmen (1938) Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) Destry Rides Again (1939) and Requiem for a Gunfighter (1965).

Joseph Cable in the 1958 film South Pacific, with Mitzi Gaynor, John Kerr had a wide range of roles throughout his career in films such as Tea and Sympathy, co-starring Deborah Kerr, and The Pit and the Pendulum, 1961. He has appeared on numerous TV shows such as the Hallmark Hall of Fame, Alcoa Theater, and Playhouse 90. He has retired from acting.
Sheila Kuehl SP

Sheila Kuehl is a former child actress, best known for her role as Zelda in the 1950s TV series Dobie Gillis, starring Dwayne Hickman. A Harvard Law School graduate, Kuehl most recently served as a Democratic member of the California State Senate, representing the 23rd district in Los Angeles County and parts of southern Ventura County. A former member of the California State Assembly, she was elected to the Senate in 2000 and served until December 2008.
Carla Laemmle SP

Niece of Universal Studios founder Carl Laemmle, she appeared in a dozen movies including the original "Phantom of the Opera" with Lon Chaney, the original "Dracula" with Bela Lugosi, and "The King of Jazz" with Paul Whiteman. During the next two decades she appeared in a number of movies and on the stage. She left films to devote her time to the love of her life, director Raymond Cannon. They traveled and wrote two books together, "How to Fish the Pacific Coast," and "The Sea of Cortez." He died in the 1970s. Amazingly, she has recently narrated "The Road to Dracula," a documentary on DVD. At the time she signed this photo in 2003, she was 94 years old. She recently appeared in Vampire Hunters Club, and had not appeared on the screen since 1938.
Charles Lane SP

Lane appeared in every movie ever made - or so it seems. His long career started in the 1920s and his face was seen in practically every major film of the 1930s and 1940s. He also guested on scores of TV shows including I Love Lucy and Petticoat Junction. He can also be seen in the Jimmy Stewart tear-jerker "It's a Wonderful Life." Lane died in July, 2007 at the age of 102.

Jesse Matthews (1907-1981) was known as London's "Dancing Divinity." She was one of England's biggest stars in the 1920s and 1930s, enjoying success in films, on radio and on the musical stage. Among the films in which she starred were This England (1923), Evergreen (1934), Forever and a Day (1943) and Edward & Mrs. Simpson" (1978). This is an informal photo signed by Matthews in the late 1930s.

Anita Page was born Anita Pomares in 1910. She started as an ingenue, appearing in "flapper" movies of the 1920s, including three with co-star Joan Crawford. She went on to appear in The Broadway Melody of 1929, one of the first all-singing all-talking movies, considered an important film by most film historians. At the height of her career she was receiving 10,000 fan letters a week. She was married twice, first to Hollywood composer Nacio Herb Brown, and later to Herschel House, a prominent businessman. Page retired to Coronado, California in the mid 1930s and did not appear in movies again until 2000, when she made Witchcraft XI, a span between films of 65 years.

Margaret Montgomery was born in 1918 to an acting family. She went to work for Century Studios while still a toddler, and would go on to appear in 150 short features and 9 full-length features during the height of her career. By the age of 8 she was essentially finished in movies. By the time she was an adult it was discovered that the fortune she earned as a child star was practically gone, allegedly spent by her parents. A similar fate awaited her only close competition in films, child actor Jackie Coogan. As an adult she spent many years in near poverty, until she found a new career as a writer, under the name Diana Serra Cary. She has written "Hollywood Posse," "Hollywood's Children," and "Whatever Happened to Baby Peggy?" She was married to Gordon Ayres from 1938 to 1948, and married Bob Cary in 1954. Her films include Her Circus Man (1921), The Darling of New York (1923), Jack and the Beanstalk (1924), and Having A Wonderful Time (1938).

Luise Rainer SP

Luise Rainer, born in Germany in 1910, was known as the Viennese Teardrop because of her emotion-evoking performances. She became a popular stage actress before being discovered by Hollywood, where she appeared in some of the major motion pictures of the era. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cast Rainer in the film The Great Ziegfeld (1936) opposite William Powell and won the Academy Award for her performance. She then made The Good Earth (1937), adapted from the Pearl S. Buck novel about daily life in the farmlands of China. She was given her second Academy Award, the first actor to ever win back-to-back Oscars. The same year, she married writer Clifford Odets. They were divorced three years later. Her career eventually floundered and she became disenamored with the Hollywood system. She appeared on Broadway and traveled during WWII selling war bonds. Rainer found happiness in a long marriage to the publisher Robert Knittel, whom she married in 1945. The couple had a daughter and made their home in Switzerland as Rainer essentially left acting behind. Her retirement from the movies lasted for 53 years, until her come-back in The Gambler (1997).

Best known for his portrayal of Felix Unger in TVs The Odd Couple, opposite Jack Klugman.
