The Buffs won a Big 12 Conference championship, four Big 12 North titles and Barnett won two AP Big 12 Coach of the Year honors. He was head coach at Fort Lewis in Durango, Colorado from 1982 to 1983, and in 1984 became assistant coach to CU's Bill McCartney. He was named head coach in 1999. Due to a handful of off-field scandals at the university, including allegations that prospective Buff recruits were lured with alcohol and prostitutes, and other publicized issues, Barnett accepted a $3 million contract settlement, bringing an end to an illustrious career at CU. |

She won the Western Open three times. She was voted Woman Athlete of the Year in 1938, 1942 and 1955. Berg died in September, 2006. |

Bob Cardenas |

Born in Mexico in 1920, Bob Cardenas moved to San Diego at the age of 5. In 1939 he joined the California National Guard, and entered into the aviation cadet program. At the onset of WWII he was sent to Twentynine Palms to establish the U.S. Army Airforces glider training school. He was assigned to the 44th Bomb Group and saw action in England as a fighter pilot. After the war he became a test pilot. In 1947 he was selected as Officer in Charge of the first supersonic flight carried out by Chuck Yeager in the Bell X-1. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1968, and was named U.S. Deputy Chief of Staff in 1970. He has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Presidential Citation. He currently serves as a member of the San Diego Mayor's Veteran Advisory Board and as a director of the Veterans Memorial Center and Museum. |

He escaped and was able to make his way to the Netherlands and safety. During Chuck Yeager's historic flight that broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1 in 1947, Hoover was Yeager's backup pilot in the a Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star. He has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and the French Criox de Guerre. |
